Form & Presence

Natural cotton, crewel-embroidered into a pillow of oversized botanicals on an open ivory ground — a large crimson bloom anchoring the left, teal and yellow flowers beside it, plum berry clusters on arching branches above. The ivory between the motifs is left bare and doing as much work as the stitching. A white cord is set into the seam all round.

Empty ground is what keeps these reading as separate objects instead of a floral pattern — crowd the face and the difference collapses. White piping on ivory is close to invisible, so the edge does nothing and the motifs carry the whole thing. The reverse is plain ivory, which is why the front does all the talking.
