Verona Floral Pillow

Cotton and wool are hooked into pile across the whole face of this pillow, ivory ground included, so the surface is one continuous nap. A navy vase, its outline drawn in rust, stands at the base; from it rise yellow flowers with rust centers on green stems, five heads spread wide enough to fill the upper half. The color blocks meet without a visible seam.

The pile takes the light in one direction and holds a shadow in the other, so the vase looks darker from the left of a sofa than from the right. Brushed by a hand, the nap shifts and the flowers soften; brushed back, they sharpen. The ivory ground is pile too, and it warms the pillow against white bedding.

The whole face is hooked pile, ivory ground included, so there is no flat cloth anywhere to take the wear. A continuous nap shows a pressure mark across the entire surface rather than in one spot, which is why this one is spot cleaned and never put through a machine.
