Sisley Gold Butter Knives

A wide spreader blade in hammered matte gold, narrowing at the collar to a flat rectangular handle. Fragments of abalone and mother of pearl are inlaid on both faces of the handle — three to four pieces per knife, each set into a recessed panel and held flush with the surrounding metal. The hammered texture runs across blade and handle without break.

At a breakfast table, the four knives sit alongside a butter dish and bread board before the meal begins. Each is picked up, used, and set back down in a different position — the shell inlay visible against the matte gold whichever way a handle faces.

Abalone and mother of pearl inlay requires careful handling around moisture — water sitting in the recessed panels can work beneath the inlay over time and loosen the fragments, so hand washing and thorough drying after each use are essential.

• Hand wash only with mild soap and warm water — do not soak or submerge
• Dry immediately and thoroughly after each wash, paying attention to the inlaid panels
• Do not place in the dishwasher — heat and prolonged moisture will damage the inlay
• Avoid abrasive cloths or harsh cleaning agents on both the inlay and the matte gold surface
• Keep away from acidic foods for extended contact — acids can dull the iridescence of the abalone over time
• Store flat in a dry place — avoid stacking directly against other objects that may press against the inlay
