Form & Presence

Natural cotton in ivory carries a drawing in one color on this pillow — indigo thread describing two seated figures, a large sun whose center is worked in gold, a vase, potted plants and cut leaves scattered between them. The figures are outlined; the leaves and sun are filled solid, so the composition moves between line and mass. At each corner hangs an indigo tassel.

A print from the doorway and stitching from a seat — the outlines are raised just enough for a fingertip to trace a figure's shoulder. The tassels swing when the pillow is moved and settle against a chair arm. With only two colors in play, it sits beside patterned cushions and stays legible.

Indigo thread describes every figure on this ivory ground, with gold worked only into the sun. Indigo is the dye most likely to run on a pale cloth, which is why this one is cleaned rather than washed.
