Russell Faceted White Marble Mortar and Pestle

The Russell Mortar presents two surfaces in the same object — a deeply carved diamond relief wrapping the exterior in geometric shadow, and a scalloped rim tracing the full circumference in a row of small, even curves. The contrast is deliberate: the faceted body reads architectural, the scalloped rim introduces a softer rhythm where hand meets stone. The pestle is smooth and cylindrical — a plain form against the carved weight of the bowl.

White marble gives the set its particular character. Soft grey veining moves across the exterior, the carved relief deepening each shadow and making the stone's tonal variation more apparent than a flat surface would allow. The interior is polished smooth — a considered shift from the dimensional exterior, the two surfaces resolved in the same material.

Dried chillies in the bowl, the pestle meeting stone with familiar resistance. The Russell works with the quiet authority of an object that was resolved before it was useful — its carved exterior catching the light, its weight holding the counter without effort.

White marble is a porous stone that absorbs moisture and reacts to acidic substances. Season the mortar before first use and wipe clean after each session to preserve the stone's finish and natural character.
