Russell Marble Mortar & Pestle

The exterior is carved in a deep diamond relief — vertical facets running the full height of the mortar wall, each edge sharp and precise. The rim finishes in a scalloped edge, small and even. Inside, the bowl is smooth. The pestle is a plain rod with a rounded head, uncarved and in the same white marble.

In the corner of a kitchen in a house near the coast, the mortar sits on a wide shelf among jars and wooden boards — the faceted exterior the most worked surface in the room. The pestle rests inside the bowl at an angle. Nothing else on the shelf carries the same depth of carving.

White marble's faceted exterior requires more attention than a smooth surface — liquid that settles into the carved grooves will mark the stone if not wiped promptly, and the scalloped rim is most susceptible to chipping.

• Rinse the bowl interior with warm water and mild soap after each use
• Dry thoroughly — pay attention to moisture sitting between the faceted exterior grooves
• Avoid acidic ingredients or harsh cleaners that will etch the marble surface
• Wipe the exterior with a soft damp cloth — do not use abrasive materials that will dull the facet edges
• Do not place in the dishwasher
• Handle with care to protect the scalloped rim from chipping
• Store away from prolonged humidity to preserve the stone's natural character
