Okinawa Wool Rug
Form & Presence
Handwoven wool and cotton, worked in large alternating triangles — ivory raised and ribbed, charcoal recessed and flat. The ivory sections carry a second geometry within: parallel ribs carved into the pile, visible only at close range. A striped border in the same two tones runs the top and bottom edges, with twisted tassel fringe at each end.
Placed in an open entryway off a wide hall, the pattern reads clearly from a distance — the alternating triangles bold enough to anchor the space before anything else is in the room. Up close, the ribbing inside each ivory section comes into focus, the charcoal ground sitting flat and still between them.
Material & Composition
- Measurements 5′ W × 8′ L
- Material Handwoven wool and cotton blend — substantial weight with a close, firm hand
- Color Palette Warm ivory and charcoal throughout; the charcoal carries a warm stone-grey tone rather than a cool grey
- Surface & Texture High-low sculpted pile — raised ribbed ivory sections over a recessed flat charcoal ground
- Pile Height High-low sculpted
- Rug Pad Recommended for grip, cushioning, and longevity
- Artisan Touches Slight variations in weave, texture, and tone are natural to each handwoven piece; tassel fringe is hand-twisted and varies slightly in length
Care & Longevity
The high-low sculpted surface of a handwoven wool and cotton rug requires vacuuming with the pile direction to preserve the definition of the ribbed sections and the contrast between raised and recessed areas.
- Vacuum regularly on a low-pile setting without a beater bar
- Vacuum with the pile direction — against the grain can disturb the ribbed ivory sections
- Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth — do not rub
- Spot-clean with mild detergent and cold water when needed
- Avoid prolonged direct sunlight to preserve both the ivory tone and charcoal depth
- Rotate periodically to ensure even wear and sun exposure
- Professional cleaning recommended for deep care
