Monty Travertine Tic-Tac-Toe
Form & Presence
A square travertine board with softly rounded corners, the surface divided into a nine-square grid by shallow incised lines. The stone is warm cream with natural voids and fossil markings — no two boards carry the same ground. The cross and ring forms are solid matte black metal, flat-topped and consistent in depth across all ten pieces.
On a wide coffee table in a house with stone floors, the board sits among books and a low bowl — pieces arranged mid-play, none removed. By evening, when the room fills and the overhead light comes on, the black forms against the cream travertine are the sharpest contrast on the surface.
Material & Composition
- Measurements Board: 8" L x 8" W x 0.75" H; Pieces: 1.5" L x 1.5" W x 0.3" H
- Weight 6 lb
- Material Travertine board and matte black metal playing pieces — the travertine heavy for its profile, the metal solid and dense in hand
- Color Palette Warm cream travertine with natural beige and ivory variation — the pieces a deep, consistent black that holds against the stone
- Surface & Texture Travertine face open-grained with natural voids and fossil detail — the metal pieces smooth and even across the full face
- Artisan Touches Natural voids and fossil markings shift across every board — no two travertine surfaces carry the same ground pattern
Care & Longevity
Travertine is a porous stone that absorbs moisture readily — the board's natural voids make it more susceptible than dense stone, and prompt wiping after any contact keeps the surface from darkening or staining over time.
- Wipe the board immediately with a soft, damp cloth if liquids make contact
- Dry thoroughly after cleaning — do not leave moisture sitting in the natural voids
- Avoid acidic substances such as citrus, wine, or vinegar, which will etch the travertine
- Avoid abrasive cleaners that will scratch and enlarge the natural voids
- Wipe metal pieces with a dry cloth only — moisture and soap will degrade the black finish over time
- Store pieces on the board or on a contained surface to avoid scattering
- Store away from direct sunlight, which can shift the warm tone of the travertine over time
