Luxor Botanical Lumbar Pillow

Cotton and wool on a charcoal ground make this lumbar pillow, the dark cloth turning every color forward. The stems and leaves are printed; over them the flowers are stitched and tufted — pink pompom heads cut like short pile, blue-and-yellow tulips in satin stitch, coral blooms with knotted centers, teal leaves in long straight threads. The print supplies the layout; the thread, the height.

The pompoms are the first thing a hand goes to — soft, cut wool that gives under a fingertip and springs back — while the tulips and leaves are firm beside them. On a pale sofa the charcoal ground makes a dark block that anchors lighter cushions; on a dark one it dissolves and only the flowers show.

• If washing at home, turn cover inside out and use a cold gentle cycle with mild detergent
• Lay flat or tumble dry on low heat to maintain fabric integrity
• Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to retain color vibrancy
• Do not iron directly over embroidery; use a protective cloth if pressing is required
