Form & Presence

Natural cotton and wool, crewel-embroidered into a pillow around a single bird — cobalt and teal body, olive head, navy tail — perched on a branching stem that arcs across the face. Blooms in cornflower, terracotta and white sit close around it. The ivory ground is left open elsewhere.

One subject makes this a picture rather than a pattern, and a picture has to be seen whole — anything stacked in front of it crops the bird and the composition goes with it. Put it at the front of a group, not behind. The spiral stitching on the body runs a different direction from the ground beneath.

Crewel wool embroidery on a cotton ground requires gentle handling — dry cleaning is recommended to preserve the detail of the bird and branch stitching and the integrity of the ivory ground.
