Gilbert Wool Rug

Wool, close-woven into a rug with a grid of twisted cords dividing the flat natural ground into cells. At the center of each, two cords cross to form a hash mark, placed in a sequence of charcoal, tan, soft gray and cream. No two adjacent cells share a color, which keeps the rhythm shifting across the field.

The cords stand above the ground, so this surface is not flat — a chair leg drags on the grid lines in a way it would not on a plain weave. From standing height the marks disappear into a warm beige field; they resolve only close up, where each one sits a little differently.

Wool flat weaves with raised cord detailing hold their shape when vacuumed regularly and kept free of grit — fine particles work into the base of the cords over time and gradually weaken the weave if left to accumulate.

• Vacuum regularly on the suction-only setting — do not use rotating brush attachments, which can catch and pull the raised cord grid
• Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth — do not rub, as this can work moisture into the base of the cords
• Spot clean with a wool-safe solution only — do not saturate the surface with water or liquid cleaner
• Rotate every six to twelve months to distribute foot traffic evenly across the grid pattern
• Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can shift the tone of the natural beige ground and fade the cord colors over time
• Professional cleaning recommended for deeper maintenance — specify wool flat-weave with raised cord detail to your cleaner
