Geneva Floral Lumbar Pillow

Natural cotton in deep indigo, cut to a lumbar pillow — the face carrying blooms worked in punch-needle loops that stand clear of the weave. Paisley-shaped leaves in pale blue and pink, a fan-shaped flower at the top, small red and orange heads on green stems, gathered across the lower two-thirds and thinning toward the upper edge.

The indigo reads first from across a room, the color of the loops second, and the pattern only resolves into blooms from a seat away. The loops hold their shape under a leaning arm and spring back when it lifts. The long side runs the width of a sofa cushion; the pillow sits low against the back.

Punch-needle loops stand clear of the cotton ground, which makes them the part of this pillow most easily snagged. The indigo is the other consideration — a deep dye lifts under heat and prolonged sun well before the stitching shows any wear.

• Lay flat or tumble dry on low heat to maintain color and stitch definition
