Estonia Hurricane Candle Holder

Stone and glass, made up as a hurricane candle holder — the base stacked in two tiers, a wider lower and a narrower upper, both worked in close relief with grooves running one continuous direction across the surface. A recess at the top takes the candle. The glass rises clear and straight above it, unworked.

The glass is what keeps a flame steady in a draft, which is the whole reason a hurricane exists — a bare taper on the same base would gutter. Two tiers narrow as they rise, so the base reads as a plinth rather than a foot. No two sets of grooves run exactly alike.

• Natural Variation Groove depth and rhythm vary slightly across each piece, and the surface of no two reads the same

Both green onyx and travertine are porous — wax drips and moisture from the candle are the primary threat, and either will mark the stone if left on the surface around the base.

• Wipe the stone base after each use — do not allow wax residue or moisture to sit on the surface
• Use only pillar candles that fit securely within the recess; an oversized candle will allow wax to overflow onto the stone
• Clean the stone with a soft damp cloth and pH-neutral soap; avoid acidic or abrasive cleaners
• Seal the stone base with a penetrating stone sealer before first use; reseal annually
• Clean the glass with warm water and a soft cloth; avoid abrasive pads
• Handle the glass and stone base separately when cleaning — do not submerge either in water
• Store the glass separately to avoid pressure on the stone relief
