Cuba Ribbed Stone Box
Form & Presence
The lid lifts cleanly from the box, its ribbed profile matching the body — close, rounded flutes running the full length of every face. The form is low and wide, corners softly rounded. Two stones: pale grey-green onyx that shifts and clouds, and dark grey travertine with open natural voids and horizontal banding.
In a study with floor-to-ceiling shelves, the box sits at the end of a row of books. The lid comes off when something needs to be put away or taken out — a key, a ring, nothing more. The ribs sit under the hand the same way every time.
Material & Composition
- Material Fossil Gray Travertine — dense, porous stone with natural voids and a raw, geological surface • Pistachio Green Onyx — cool grey-green stone with shifting clouded variation and a smooth polished finish
- Color Palette Pistachio Green Onyx: pale grey-green ground with darker clouding and faint white veining • Fossil Gray Travertine: dark grey ground with horizontal light grey and cream banding throughout
- Surface & Texture Pistachio Green Onyx: polished and smooth • Fossil Gray Travertine: openly porous with natural voids — unpolished, raw to the touch
- Measurements 10" L x 5" W x 3" H
- Weight 10 lb
- Natural Variation Each box is cut from a different section of stone — the clouding in the onyx and the void distribution in the travertine shift from piece to piece, placing the pattern differently on every face
Care & Longevity
Travertine is a porous stone with a naturally textured surface that requires gentle handling to preserve its natural character — the open voids that define the stone are also the places most vulnerable to moisture, oils, and abrasive cleaning. The polished onyx variant is more closed at the surface but equally sensitive to acids and prolonged moisture contact.
- Wipe both variants with a soft, dry cloth after handling.
- Keep away from oils and acidic substances — citrus, spirits, and vinegar will work into both stone surfaces.
- Do not use abrasive cloths or scouring pads on either variant — the travertine voids are particularly vulnerable.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to moisture — do not leave either box in damp conditions.
- Apply a penetrating stone sealer every 6–12 months, particularly for the travertine variant.
- Handle the lid with care — lift cleanly from the box rather than sliding to protect both surfaces at the join.
