Cairo Onyx Bowl

Beige onyx, carved into a wide, generous bowl — eleven and a half inches across — with deep vertical flutes running continuously across the exterior and interior both, fanning outward from the base and ending in a scalloped rim. The stone is warm beige with faint mineral variation, fine flecks of gray and ochre distributed through it.

Twenty pounds of stone, four inches deep: the bowl is set down once and left, and what goes into it — fruit, a few lemons, nothing — is seen against the flutes rather than instead of them. The grooves run inside as well as out, so the interior is never plain when empty. Lightly honed, it is stone to the touch.

Beige onyx is a porous stone that responds to what it comes into contact with — oils, acids, and standing moisture are the most common sources of staining and surface change. A lightly honed finish is more open than a polished one, so regular sealing is the most important single step in keeping this bowl in good condition.

• Wipe with a soft, dry cloth — do not leave moisture sitting on the surface.
• Keep away from acidic substances — citrus, vinegar, and wine will work into the stone and alter the finish.
• Keep away from oils — cooking oil and skin oils will stain a honed onyx surface over time.
• Do not use abrasive cloths or harsh chemical cleaners.
• Apply a penetrating stone sealer every 6–12 months to protect against staining.
• Do not submerge in water or leave standing liquid inside the bowl.
