The stone is grey-green onyx — cool and pale, soft green clouding across a grey ground. The cloche knob is faceted glass.
A long table on the lawn, Sunday, wine and fruit already out. The board arrives with the cloche on — the grey-green stone steady on the linen cloth, the chiseled rim sitting at the edge of everything arranged around it. The knob lifts once, when the cheese is ready to be cut.
Grey-green onyx is a dense but porous stone — acids and food moisture are the two things most likely to work into the surface and alter the finish over time. Wipe the board promptly after each use and keep the chiseled edge border dry, as the cut surface is more open to moisture than the polished face.
