Beatrix Marble Salt & Pepper Set

Terra Bianco marble, worked into a pair of mills — bands of raised and recessed carving running the full height of each body, the top cap widening slightly to a faceted edge. A chrome knob sits centered on each, knurled and engraved: S on one, P on the other. Same stone, same form, the veining falling differently.

The relief bands give a greasy hand something to hold. The knobs are engraved S and P, so neither has to be lifted to tell them apart. Terra Bianco is the palest marble in the range, and the carving is what keeps a white mill from reading as blank.

Terra Bianco marble around the grinder top is the most vulnerable point — salt residue and moisture collecting in the relief carving will work into the stone if the mills are not wiped down after each use.

• Wipe both mills dry after every use — pay particular attention to the relief grooves where residue can settle
• Clean with a soft damp cloth and pH-neutral soap; avoid abrasive cleaners on both the stone and the chrome top
• Do not submerge in water or leave standing in moisture
• Seal the stone surfaces with a penetrating stone sealer before first use; reseal annually
• Avoid acidic substances near the stone — citrus, vinegar, and similar will etch the surface over time
• Store upright in a dry environment when not in regular use
